Venous Incompetence Mapping

Venous incompetence mapping (60 minutes per leg)- this is scanning all the superficial and deep veins of each leg and generating a map of the incompetent (abnormal) veins.

The Sonographer, whilst using an ultrasound machine, will place a transducer on your leg and scan every vein within both the superficial and deep systems. To do so, you will need to be in the standing position. At different intervals of the scan, the Sonographer will squeeze the leg to assess each vein for competency. Due to the fact that you will be standing for a long period of time, make sure you are well hydrated and have eaten before the scan.

At the Sydney Skin and Vein Clinic we not only assess the large superficial veins but the small diametered veins as well as they could be the cause of your symptoms. Therefore the scan here is more detailed than other practices which may require longer scanning time.

This is the report image that gets generated after your ultrasound. The red lines on the map pertain to incompetent (not working) veins and the blue line pertain to competent or working veins.

This is one of the positions that you might be in during your ultrasound examination. The image on the right is an ultrasound image of an incompetent vein.
